Question of the Week: Is Winter Over?

Feb 28, 2020 | 2:24 PM

PRINCE GEORGE–Is winter over?

In short, no–this according to Peter Jackson, an Environmental Science Professor at UNBC.

We based this week’s question of the week on last week’s beautiful spring-like conditions, however, this week has been a bit of a different story with snowfall on Tuesday evening, Thursday morning and even today (Friday).

“It’s been a fairly normal winter.”–Peter Jackson, Professor, Environmental Science, UNBC.

Although temperatures may seem mild for our winter, Jackson says that they are in fact quite normal for the season. “We did have a period of cold in January…it got down to…some of the coldest temperatures we’ve seen in the past 15 or 16 years,” said Jackson, referring to the -44 we reached during our cold snap earlier in the year.

Looking at the near future Jackson says temperatures will fluctuate between plus five and minus five, with the potential to get cooler overnight, over the course of the next two weeks. As for claiming that winter is in fact over…Jackson says it’s too early to tell.

“It’s too early to say. We can always get a snowstorm or a few flurries.”–Peter Jackson, Professor, Environmental Science, UNBC.

Environment Canada is forecasting below-normal temperatures for our transition into spring, which Jackson says could have its perks such as no flooding.
