PRINCE GEORGE – There’s a new program at Prince George Secondary School designed to help student address stress and improve mindfulness.

“We have students that have a lot going on in their lives. A lot of stress. And we see the stress in classes and in school,” explains PGSS Teacher Tiger Thakkar. “We also see them hiding that stress. We also notice that social media amplifies that stress 24 hours a day.”

He and Heather Marren-Reitsma Launched the program in earnest this September, although it has been pilotted the year before.

Five students are now enrolled in the program and they have nothing but praise for how it has helped.

“A lot people, myself included, would let emotions get the best of us and act without thinking about it,” explained student Emily Pinko.

“Being able to focus on your task at hand and do that calmly is important, not only with studies but with extra curriculars and anything in life, really,” added Peyton Chicoine.

“I think mental health is something that needs to be focused on everywhere. And giving kids the time to focus on themselves,” said Brynn Witwicki, when asked is she felt the program should be offered in all District 57.
