PRINCE GEORGE – A bid to bring ride-sharing to Prince George has failed.

The Passenger Transportation Board has refused an application by Uride to operate in a number of locations, including Prince George.

Uride started in Thunder Bay, Ontario, and its aim is to provide ride-sharing services to small- and mid-sized communities. It filed an application with the Board last Septemver and, today, the Board ruled on the application.

In its decision, the Board writes: “…that Uride’s business plan fails to demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the passenger transportation business in British Columbia generally, and of the Act, Regulation and the requirements under the National Safety Code, specifically. Instead, its business plan focusses mainly on the company’s profile, marketing strategies, and sales.”

It goes on to write: “Uride’s business plan also did not demonstrate knowledge of the role of the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia in this province.” “The Board also has concerns about Uride’s management capability regarding the service proposed. The company’s current proposal for B.C. would require drivers and vehicles to be operating under Uride’s management. However, Uride did not provide any information regarding the initial hiring of drivers and inspection of vehicles.

Of particular concern to the Board is the lack of sufficient information in Uride’s business plan to show how it will provide ongoing active management of the vehicles and drivers operating in B.C.”

While disappointed with the outcome, Uride says it plans to resubmit a new application sometime in the future.
