PRINCE GEORGE — Last week, School District 57 announced it was going to start the process towards changing the name of Kelly Road Secondary School. A wave of backlash led to petitions and rallies held against the motion, and this weekend was no different. Dozens made their way in front of the SD 57 board office Saturday for a rally against the change.

The name Kelly Road Secondary School is so much more than just a name to the community around the school. So residents took matters into their own hands, drawing petitions both for and against the name change. It has led to the school board announcing there will be a public consultation, but those against the decision still wanting to make themselves heard loud and proud.

The original request to change the name came from the Lheidli T’enneh and Indigenous Education Committee and is seen as a way towards reconciliation. But many at Saturday’s protest feel there are other ways to achieve that goal, saying there could be ways to include everyone in the process and drive home the importance of equality.

School District 57 is expected to release its plan for the public consultation early this week.
