PRINCE GEORGE – The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee is coming to Prince George, and if you’re wondering why you haven’t heard of the previous 24 bees, that’s because it’s no such spelling bee at all, but rather the title of the next production being put forth by UNBC Musical Productions.

While the production is being performed entirely by students, Theatre NorthWest will be lending their venue to the club in order to showcase the musical on stage for the public, something that actress Hayley Jakubowski is excited for, especially given how much effort its been to balance her studies with her theatre activities.

“It’s a lot of work,” says Jakubowski. “I have about 16 hours of course work to keep up with, as well as we have three-hour rehearsals on Monday and Wednesday, and then we have five-hour rehearsals on Sundays. It’s a lot of work to keep up with that. It is a lot of work but it’s rewarding.”

According to Director Veronica Church, the time commitment is that of a second part-time job for many involved, but its the passion that drives the club, sticking to the industries phase of “the show must go on”.

We might not be the most polished and well trained, we’re still learning as we go, we’re learning to work together and Theatre NorthWest has been such a big help in teaching us how to act backstage, how to have proper theatre etiquette, and how to be in a professional space,” said Church.

“Come and see the show. They’ve put so much time and effort into the show, a lot of heart and soul.”

Tickets to UNBC’s rendition of the 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee can be purchased through Theatre NorthWest’s website in person at Books & Co with shows running from March 12th to 15th, and 19th to 22nd.
