PRINCE GEORGE – It was the who’s who of the political and business community, all gathered to hear about a new enterprise coming to Prince George. BC Hemp’s theme is “Growing New Possibilities” and the CEO of the company says the community is a big part of the mandate, as are jobs.

“In a nutshell, developing tertiary markets where entrepreneurs can get involved and grow,” explains Michael Fazakas, CEO of BC Hemp. “I think jobs are a big thing to talk about. I think, between all the production sites, we can talk about employing a lot of local people. On the agricultural side, we can develop a crop that is financially viable to the farmer and, in turn, they can employ a lot of people.”

In fact, when considering everything from growing the hemp to producing it, BC Hemp believes it will generate 1,500 jobs. Hemp pencils, for example, are sold at the Book Store at UNBC.

“We’re talking about 200 to 300 companies that will be an offshoot to this industry,” explained Remi Belaj, Chairman of the Board. “People are making textiles out of it, making bedding, animal bedding. So, it’s cool.”

The company expects to spend $350 million over the next three years and work has begun on a production facility on PG Pulp Mill Road.

Memoranda of Understanding have been inked between BC Hemp, the Prince George Airport Authority, Community Futures and UNBC. Belaj says the abundance of shipping options coupled with cheap real estate made Prince George the ideal location.
