Potential disaster averted

Train derailment near Giscome Elementary could have been much worse

PRINCE GEORGE — An update Tuesday from the Transportation Safety Board has shown last week’s train derailment near Giscome Elementary School could have been a lot worse. The TSP says seven of the derailed cars were loaded with liquefied petroleum gas, which is an extremely flammable material. Another was carrying methanol.

This announcement, which has since been confirmed by CN, followed an original CN statement the day after the incident which left out that information. It only read a small amount of petroleum coke, a non-hazardous by-product on the refining process, had spilled into a nearby creek.

CKPG has reached out to CN for comment, however, the company said it was not conducting any interviews on the matter. There is no word on a cause.
