BC RCMP warn of scammers using COVID-19 to make a buck
BRITISH COLUMBIA—Even a pandemic doesn’t stop fraudsters from wanting to make a quick buck.
BC RCMP are warning the public of COVID-19 related scams. RCMP say that the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre has reported that scammers are setting up websites to sell bogus products, and using fake emails, texts and social media posts as a ruse to take victims money and personal information.
A release by BC RCMP says that the emails, texts and posts may be promoting awareness and prevention tips, and fake information about cases in your neighbourhood—potentially asking you to donate to victims, offering advice on unproven treatments, offering protective gear or detection kits, or fake home sanitizing services.
RCMP want the public to know that there are currently no vaccines or drugs approved to treat or prevent COVID-19. With the current forecast for official vaccines being months away, at which time the announcement would be made by legitimate government sources and health authorities.
