Bus drivers concerns being raised, public transit changes expected soon
PRINCE GEORGE — As many continue to work from home, some essential service workers do not have that ability.
On Monday, a source tells CKPG seven operators for BC Transit buses in Prince George called in sick. An alarmingly high amount of drivers despite ridership down between 40-60 per cent. For the drivers, though, coming into work was not worth the risk. Anthony Kirk with Teamsters Local 31, PG bus drivers’ union, said many complaints have been filed recently, however, they are appreciative of measures taken to reduce driver-passenger interaction.
As of March 21st, precautionary measures taken to minimize interaction between bus operators and customers include free rides on buses and handyDARTs, and access only through the rear entrances. Those needing the ramp will still go in through the front.
There will be day-to-day changes as BC Transit continues to work through challenges brought up through COVID-19. According to Kirk, reduced service in the Prince George area is expected to be announced next week.
