PRINCE GEORGE – A local sporting event is up for a national award. The 2019 World Para Nordic Skiing Championships are up for an International Sport Event of the Year award by the Canadian Sport Tourism Alliance for events with a budget greater than $2 million.

“Yeah, one of the three finalists? Really exciting. Big kudos to the team that put on the event,” says Colin Carson, Manager of Sport Tourism for Tourism Prince George.

There is some stiff competition for top honours, though. They are up against the 2019 IIHF World Junior Championships and the Grand Prix Cyclists de Quebec et de Montreal. But former Chair of the Organizing Committee, Kevin Pettersen says the local event had many unique factors.

“There were a lot of firsts here. It was the first world championships ever hosted in Prince George. It was the first time this world championships was ever hosted in Canada. It was the first time gold medals in this event were ever awarded in Canada. So the first being in Canada was a real feather in our cap.”
