VICTORIA — Good news on the education front.

The provincial government has announced a tentative agreement has been reached between the BC Teachers Federation (BCTF) and the BC Public School Employers’ Association (BCPSEA).

The agreement was reached under the government’s Sustainable Services Negotiating Mandate which the Province says focuses on improving services for people and ensuring fair and affordable compensation.

Deals of the agreement have not been disclosed pending ratification by the teachers and the employer-members of the BCPSEA. That ratification process is expected to be different than what is traditionally seen and there is no timeline on how long it will take.

“Typically, ratification would involve school visits, we would have huge meetings and invite the BCTF Executive up answer questions,” explained Joanne Hapke, President of the Prince George District Teachers’ Association. “The Executive is working on a plan now and it is probably going to be some sort of online voting.”

The tentative agreement covers just over 45,000 teachers in B.C.’s 60 school districts.

Teachers will be back to work Monday despite school not being in session. There is still no word on when classes will resume. In the meantime, School District 57 will be working on its Continuity of Learning Plan. Chair Tim Bennett said it is too early to talk about what the plan would look like, but the goal is to find a way to communicate with everyone involved and find a way to give students the ability to continue learning despite limitations set by COVID-19 precautionary measures.
