Staying afloat

PRINCE GEORGE – Just over a week ago, Nolan Nicholson, manager of Trim-Line Graphics & Signs in Prince George, was sleepless, unsure of whether he would have to close up shop as provincial mandates called for the closure of non-essential businesses in hopes of containing the spread of COVID-19.

But now, it’s a different story.

“It still is stressful, but we were trying to figure out a way to keep the doors open, what we were going to do if we were not considered an essential service. My auntie came to me with this idea and we thought about it over the weekend, thought up of a concept and it seemed to work, and it’s gathered speed.”

The idea would allow for Trim-Line to be an essential service as they would begin manufacturing plexiglass barriers for retailers and other services needing to remain open but also ensure social distancing.

“I saw it for ourselves. Just standing behind the counter, we’re looking at customers and they’re coming in, but there’s nothing there. We felt if we could come up with an idea that created some separation but still have that face-to-face, and keep it as safe as possible.”

In just a week of both making and selling the barriers, Nicholson says they have been able to sell over 350 units. He believes even when all is said and done in terms of COVID-19’s pandemic, they will continue to be seeing a demand for the barriers.

“We’ll continue to be selling these even after all this is over because unfortunately people were scared before of getting sick and they’ll be even more now.”

Even though he’s been able to keep the business afloat and his employees working, Nicholson says he isn’t breathing a sigh of relief quite yet.

“Who knows? They could say everyone is shut down on Monday. We’re going to do as much as we can, while we can, to keep things rolling. I went from stressed out because I thought we were closing to being stressed out because we got so busy.”

The plexiglass barriers are starting at $92 each for a unit measuring 30 by 24 inches.
