Inspired by ‘Hearts of PG’, local woman makes charitable keychains

PRINCE GEORGE – A local woman is trying to do what she can in hopes of spreading love and compassion during the COVID-19 pandemic, while also supporting food banks.

Carol Hansson, from As You Wish Custom Stamped Designs, has been creating “City Heart” keychains, a project she was inspired to do following a viral campaign that was first launched here in Prince George.

“The Facebook Hearts of PG is what inspired me to start making the City Heart keychains because essentially the idea is for people to be able to get out and about looking for hearts, something that’s meaningful,” explained Hansson.

Bailey Grose, the one behind the launch of the Hearts of PG campaign, has seen the initiative explode over the past two weeks as she and her family are cooped up at home like many others.

Hearts of PG was launched as a scavenger hunt of sorts with residents putting up decorative hearts in their window amidst the COVID-19 pandemic with people spending more time at home.

“When I posted it, it was initially jus to start something in Prince George. It became a global thing quite quickly,” said Grose. “I know that there’s a page called “Heart Hunters” and they’re located in Canada as well and they have over 600-thousand members. It spread quite quickly.”

As a result of the page here in Prince George, a number of small businesses have found creative ways to continue while also supporting local charities.

Lee Reding of Vinyl-Lee Custom Creations has been creating #HeartsofPG decals for $5with a percentage of the proceeds going to St. Vincent de Paul. Hansson is selling her keychains for $15 each with $10 of that going directly towards the nearest food bank of the individual purchasing them.

So far, she’s made a number of keychains for Prince George but has also received orders from Kelowna, Port Alberni, as well as Dartmouth, Nova Scotia.
