Options for municipal tax relief
PRINCE GEORGE – The federal and provincial governments have been announcing financial relief almost daily, but local governments’ hands are tied when it comes to changing municipal taxes.
That’s because the Community Charter dictates when municipal taxes are due. The City essentially lives from paycheque to paycheque in that the taxes collected last year keep the City operating every day, ensuring everything from the roads we drive to the water we drink.
But one City Councillor has been investigating ways that the City of Prince George could help out its residents.
“The City of Trail, to my understanding, is they’ve directed their Administration to look at their capital plan and their tax increases for this year and directed them to bring back a report, telling them we want to reduce the tax rate for this year,” says Councillor Brian Skakun.
