PRINCE GEORGE—Indigenous students in BC currently attending post-secondary who have been impacted by the COVID-19 crisis will benefit from additional provincial emergency funding.

The government is providing an additional $1.5 million to supplement the Indigenous Emergency Assistance Fund, a fund that assists Indigenous students who are experiencing unexpected financial emergencies that may affect their ability to finish their studies.

“Our government is increasing emergency financial assistance for Indigenous students to ensure they have the necessary funds to focus on staying heathy, meeting their educational goals and finishing their semester.” — Melanie Mark, Minister of Advanced Education, Skills and Training

The fund not only supports Indigenous students with living expenses but also with other unanticipated expenses including, medical, dental and optical costs, and travel costs for family crisis or community obligations.

“These additional financial supports will assist Indigenous students as they pay for emergency living expenses or manage unexpected costs during this period of economic uncertainty,” says UNBC Interim President Dr. Geoff Payne. “I am grateful that the Ministry of Advanced Education, Skills and Training is enhancing UNBC’s ability to assist our students in need through the Indigenous Emergency Assistance Fund.”

Students who access the emergency funding are not required to repay it.
