‘This will work’: Weeks or months of social distancing to come

OTTAWA—Canada’s Prime Minister addressed new numbers set out by federal public health officials in this mornings COVID-19 response briefing.

With models released on how the COVID-19 pandemic could play out in the coming months and the potential for as many as 22,000 deaths, Trudeau urged that people do not give up now.

He empathized with Canadians saying that as we get into the summer months it will be harder to stay home, however, said that these measures must be taken in order to prevent the worst possible outcome.

“We are in a fork in the road.”—Justin Trudeau

The Prime Minister recanted that the ball is in our court in order to prevent the spread and prevent more deaths due to the novel coronavirus.

The Public Health Agency of Canada says short-term estimates are more reliable, and that up to 700 people could die by the end of next week.

Officials warn that if people don’t obey social-distancing and self-isolation rules, the death toll could be much higher.

Chief Public Health Officer Dr. Theresa Tam says “we cannot prevent every death but we must prevent every death that we can.”

The best outcome will still take time to get over, with the peak in the late spring and the possibility for smaller outbreaks here and there throughout the summer. Trudeau mentioned that the social distancing measures that have been enforced, will continue to be for the weeks and possibly months to come.
