TYH: Is snacking while working from home bad?

Apr 14, 2020 | 8:30 AM

I am working from home, and I am sure I am not alone seeing what’s been going on recently (the COVID-19 pandemic.)

I have also found that because I am working from home I am snacking a lot more because I am around all the foods I love without having a set portion (which I would do if I was going into the office.)

So I chatted with Laurel Burton a Population Health Dietitian with Northern Health and she told me that my snacking was okay—which instantly made me feel at ease.

“We eat for so many different reasons, we eat for hunger, we sometimes eat because of emotions.”—Laurel Burton, Population Health Dietitian, Northern Health

Burton told me that eating out of stress and emotion is okay, especially during these times, as a matter of fact it all comes down to listening to our bodies—listening to our hunger cues. “Food is more about than just what you eat, it’s how you eat as well,” she said.

But are there snacks in specific that we should avoid reaching for when our office is home? Burton says no.

“I think there aren’t any foods you should stay away from…I think you know, just allowing yourself the food that you want at that time.”— Laurel Burton, Population Health Dietitian, Northern Health

Burton also mentions that reaching for foods that fuel you whether it’s nuts or granola is important to any diet.

So there you have it, if you do find yourself snacking a bit more often than usual at home, it’s okay.
