Expanding eligibility for CERB: those making $1,000 or less a month are eligible, says PM

OTTAWA—Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced the expanding of the Canadian Emergency Response Benefit (CERB) to include more Canadians being hit financially due to COVID-19.

Canadians making up to $1,000 a month are now eligible to receive the CERB, this will include those who may have ran out of E.I. since January, seasonal workers who may have had jobs lined up for the summer who won’t be able to work due to the virus, artists and creators who are making $1,000 or less a month.

The Prime Minister announced the launch of a web portal available on the government of Canada’s website to support Canadian’s mental health during this time.

Trudeau said he will be speaking with provincial and territorial leaders across Canada tomorrow about boosting emergency workers pay for anyone earning under $2,500 a month.

As for students and businesses affected by the pandemic, Trudeau says discussions are taking place in order to get help out very soon.

The Prime Minister closed his address reminding Canadians that although we don’t know how long this pandemic will last, “for this to end we need to stay home, we need to limit our comings and goings as much as possible, and if everyone does this, we will get through this.”
