PRINCE GEORGE – It’s a rite of passage for every young high school student. Graduation.

But the COVID-19 pandemic has changed everything. There may not be a ceremony in June after all. It’s a heartbreaker for some graduating students, like Hunter Helfrich.

“It’s a very big moment in your high school career to have that graduation ceremony. Everybody looks forward to it. My grandparents had a ceremony. My parents had a ceremony. I would like one too.”

School District 57 has yet to decide if there will be convocation in June but it’s looking less and less likely as each day passes.

“It’s looking like it may not be possible to have graduation ceremonies prior to the end of June given that currently, civic facilities are not open,” explains Anita Richardson, Superintendent for the district.

However, Richardson says that doesn’t mean there won’t be some form of celebration. Welcome news for Hunter.

“I don’t care if it’s close to Christmastime. I just want to walk the stage. It’s not about when it is, it’s just that I would get to have it.”

In the meantime, Hunter is also looking forward to the next stage of his life – university, hopefully, in September.
