Cougars select Riley Heidt #2 overall at WHL Bantam Draft

The 2020 WHL Bantam Draft is underway and the Prince George Cougars didn’t have to wait long to make their first pick.

The club selected forward Riley Heidt #2 overall. After playing two seasons with Martinsville at the Bantam AA level, Heidt was allowed to move up and play at the Midget AAA level last year. As an underage forward at the Midget AAA level, Heidt had 17 goals and 20 assists in 44 games.

With their second pick of the first round, the Cougars selected forward Caden Brown #17 overall from Delta Hockey Academy. Brown, from Fort St.John B.C, had 35 goals and 30 assists this past season and was the Captain of his team.

The Cougars closed out the first round by selecting forward Ryker Singer with the #22 overall pick from Lloydminster. Singer had 30 goals and 21 assists in 32 games played last season with the Lloydminster Bobcats Bantam AAA. He also had 128 penalty minutes.

In the second round, the Cougars select blue liner Bauer Dumanski from the Humboldt Bantam AA Broncos. In 30 games this past season, the d-man had 16 goals and 17 assists.

With the 46th overall pick, the Cougars selected blue liner Rylan Brown from OHA Edmonton. Brown had 7 goals and 17 assists in 27 games with OHA this season.

With their 2nd pick of the 3rd round, the Cougars selected Zackary Shantz 66th overall from GPAC Storm Bantam AAA. In 33 games this season, Shantz had 34 goals and 18 assists.

The 4th round saw the Cougars select Chase Walker from Red Deer with the 70th overall pick. The forward had 18 goals and 12 assists in 28 games in the 19/20 season.

In the 5th round, the Cats would select Walker’s teammate Ephram McNutt 92nd overall. The blueliner had 2 goals and 16 assists.

With their 2nd pick of the 5th round, the Cougars add d-man Dylan Compton from Shawinigan Lake School Bantam prep. In 24 games last year Compton had 5 goals and 13 assists.

In the 6th round, the Cougars picked goaltender Liam Hallett of the West Van Warriors 114th overall.

Hallett was the final selection the Cougars made in the 2020 draft.
