PRINCE GEORGE—The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of B.C. has confirmed that a male involved in a break and enter of a local sporting goods store earlier this month has died.

Prince George RCMP responded to an alarm set off at a sporting goods store on the 1400 block of 3rd Ave. at around 4:30 a.m. on April 12.

The sporting goods store is known to sell firearms and ammunition.

After several hours of negotiation, the male was apprehended by police, medically cleared at the hospital and taken to Prince George RCMP detachment cells.

The man later went into medical distress while in custody of the Prince George RCMP, and was re-transported to hospital where he was found to be suffering serious injuries.

The IIO was notified that the male had died in hospital on April 20. The IIO continues to investigate the incident.

The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
