PG Recycling Depot back open but not without its challenges

PRINCE GEORGE — Over the last month, businesses have steadily been shutting down or finding ways to work at home. Recently, the Prince George Recycling and Return-It Centre re-opened despite being such a close-quarters business and having to adhere to social distancing.

“It’s been rather more hectic than we expected. Things have been quite busy and a big thing is trying to keep staff in place and we get everyone safely processed,” Manager Ken Ziemer explained. “We’ve got everybody with masks and gloves and we are asking our customers to wait outside until we let them in so that we’re limiting how many are in the building at once.

“Especially in the first week figuring out the flow and trying to catch up on everything [has been challenging]. Having an extra guy out front in order to allow customers in takes away from the back so we’ve been feeling like we’re short on staff but we’re getting through.”

The Province has a specific set of guidelines and rules to abide by for businesses to stay open through the pandemic, most of which coincide with social distancing and extreme sanitation. But just because one business can re-open, that does not mean all can.

“There is still an order that all personal service establishments, and that includes hairdressers and nail salons and similar type businesses, remain closed,” said Dr. Rakel Kling, a medical health officer with Northern Health. As for when these services or any others not able to reopen, she said the timeline is still “up in the air and we’ll look to [Provincial Health Officer] Dr. Bonnie Henry to guide when these orders can be lifted.”

In-depth information on what businesses can do and what customers should be aware of is available on the BC CDC website.
