PRINCE GEORGE – It was with an overwhelming response from the public engagement that the Board of Education Trustees for School District No. 57 received the data regarding a potential name change for Kelly Road Secondary School.

The board gathered for an online forum Wednesday (April 22, 2020) night to review the summary report of the KRSS Engagement on the naming of the new educational facility in the Hart, set to open this coming September.

The purpose of the review, which garnered 2,707 responses, was aimed to help trustees make their final decision on the proposed KRSS name change, which will be presented during the Regular Public Meeting on April 28, 2020.

Four recommendations have since been put forth by trustees, which will be fielded during that meeting.

Trustee Ron Polillo will be voicing his recommendation that the Board opts for a dual name for the new school building, calling it Kelly Road Shas Ti Secondary School, citing the majority of respondents (85.5 per cent) to the questionnaire indicated that both histories/stories of Kelly Road and Shas Ti should be acknowledged.

Trustee Sharel Warrington plans to recommend that the school retains the name of Kelly Road while wanting ancestral history of the Lheidli T’enneh, Shas Ti and the Dakelh language to be incorporated within, around and on the outside of the new facility. Her reasoning stems from the 68 per cent of respondents who support the school retaining its original name.

She indicates this would be a joint process between the staff and students of the school and the leaders and Elders of the Lheidli T’enneh.

Meanwhile, both Trent Derrick and Betty Bekkering are wanting the school to be renamed Shas Ti Secondary School. Derrick’s recommendation will bring with it a suggestion that the school’s gym honours the history of John Kelly with his name bestowed upon it. As for Bekkering, she brings a recommendation that the staff, students, school leaders, and senior administration begin a process on ways to incorporate Kelly Road’s history into the new school.

The decision will be made through a vote following the four trustees voice their recommendations. The Board of Education will hold its Regular Public Meeting on Tuesday, April 28th beginning at 6:00 p.m. with a live stream being broadcast through the SD57 website.
