PRINCE GEORGE—Tonight’s the night.

On February 25, 2020, SD57 Board of Education Trustee Trent Derrick put forward a motion at the regular public board meeting that the Board of Education engages in the process to rename the newly constructed Kelly Road Secondary School to Shas Ti—Grizzly Path in the local Dakelh language—Secondary School.

The motion was moved and carried unanimously by School Board Trustees to consider the possible name change.

However, many Prince George residents received the news of the motion negatively—pushing the School District to create a public engagement that would collect concerned residents feedback, online and over the phone.

The online engagement was launched on March 20 and closed on April 17.

2,707 people responded to the questionnaire, voicing their concerns and opinions via online, phone and mail.

A summary report including the feedback from the engagement was presented to school board trustees last week. It found that the majority of respondents believe the name should remain as Kelly Road Secondary.

60 per cent of the respondents identified as being from the Hart area of Prince George.

The naming decision will be made tonight at the School Board’s regularly scheduled Public Meeting at 6 p.m., which can be viewed online.

The new school is scheduled to be open in September.
