Perfect time to start pruning trees

PRINCE GEORGE — For anyone doing some spring cleaning around their yard, it is the perfect time to be proactive in pruning your fruit trees. Thinning out trees before fruits start budding will help you in the long run by stopping the chance of overproducing fruits.

The basic rule of thumb to follow is, first, take care of the three D’s, dead, damaged, or diseased. Then thinning out and cleaning up the rest to make the tree evenly spaced. If it is not something you take care of, it could cause issues down the line.

According to Northern Bear Awareness Society President Dave Bakker, “A lot of the fruit, when a tree overproduces, doesn’t fully ripen. So we get a lot of windfall, it sits on the ground and of course bears are attracted to scents and other things then it will remember where that [food source] is. So a properly maintained tree gives you the opportunity to have a manageable harvest with no overabundance of apples and not knowing what to do with them.”
