PRINCE GEORGE— The Prince George RCMP say they have received a number of inquiries about crime statistics amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, and have released several comparison statistics from this time last year.

RCMP say that violent crime against persons was up slightly in March, but down nearly 25 per cent in April.

In the month of March, domestic assaults were up nearly ten per cent in comparison to last year during the same time. For the month of April domestic assaults are down by 9 per cent.

In a release, Prince George RCMP say that break and enters may be “of particular concern to the public as a few incidents have been highlighted by the media as of late,” however, property crime for 2020 is within range of previously reported data. RCMP data indicated an increase of only 1 incident in March followed up by a decrease of two incidents so far in April.

Shoplifting reports are down more than 35 per cent in March and nearly 75 per cent in April, compared to last year—RCMP say this is to be expected as stores have closed or there is strictly controlled access at many businesses.

Shoplifting is the major contributor to the overall reduction in all thefts by 19 per cent in March and 33 per cent so far in April.

An increase in suspicious circumstances and unwanted person files have been reported at the Detachment for the months of March and April compared to 2019. RCMP suspect the number of increased calls is due to more people being at home and are reporting what they see.

As for COVID-19 related reports, since March 13th the Prince George RCMP has been tracking files that are associated, or are a direct result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

From March 25th to April 22nd, the Detachment has received between one to five COVID-19 related reports, daily. With most of the reports being from concerned members of the public reporting other community members who are not following social distancing or self-quarantine rules.

Anyone with information of people not abiding by public health orders is asked to contact 311, within the City of Prince George or call 1-888-268-4319 outside of City limits.
