PRINCE GEORGE— Chief of the Lheidli T’enneh Nation, Dayi Clayton Pountney says he is disappointed in last night’s outcome in the new Kelly Road naming decision.

“We are extremely disappointed that a majority of Board members reversed their support of Feb.25th to name the new school Shas Ti,” said Pountney in a release.

“They bowed to pressure from a vocal group of outspoken residents and in the process, have thrown up a major roadblock in the way of truth and reconciliation.”—Dayi Clayton Pountney, Chief of the Lheidli T’enneh Nation

Pountney continued by questioning what this decision will say to students.

“How can we trust SD57 ever again to follow through on its commitments?” said Pountney.

“And, where is the accountability and integrity here? We just celebrated the first Balhats hosted in our territory in over 73 years last November to celebrate our relationship with SD57. We’ve come such a long way in the past few years and then when the going gets tough, a majority of Trustees fold. What message does this send to the community, the province and our country?”—Dayi Clayton Pountney, Chief of the Lheidli T’enneh Nation

Last nights decision by School Board Trustees saw a 4-3 vote to dual name the new school, including both Kelly Road and Shas Ti in the name.

Pountney says their Council and community will take all the time required to review the decision before determining their next steps.

“It is clear that we cannot trust what SD57 has to say. The Board of Education has betrayed our nation, our students and our members. All I can say for sure is that our relationship with SD57 has been damaged by those Board members who changed their vote. And, it will take a very long time to heal.”—Dayi Clayton Poutney, Chief of the Lheidli T’enneh Nation
