More motorcycles means extra care on roads: Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month

VICTORIA—Yes, it’s already May 1st and the month of May has been proclaimed Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month by the province.

B.C. is reminding drivers to pay special attention when sharing the road with motorcyclists.

As temperatures warm up, motorcyclists are more inclined to hit the roads.

Drivers are asked to allow at least three to four seconds of following distance when behind a motorcycle and to give plenty of lane space when passing.

According to the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure, motorcycles are often closer than they seem and it can be difficult to tell how fast they are moving—drivers should be prepared to yield.

Most motorcycle related accidents occur at intersections, drivers should scan intersections carefully, especially when turning left. Riders are recommended to adjust their lane position and reduce speed when approaching an intersection.

Motorcycle drivers and their passengers should wear all the gear, all the time, in all weather conditions. This includes a helmet with a full-face visor, leather or heavy fabric jacket and heavy, over the ankle boots.

The Province asks that motorcyclists enjoy their rides, while respecting regulations around excessive exhaust noise.
