Emergency Preparedness Week

Emergency Preparedness Week

PRINCE GEORGE -This is Emergency Preparedness Week across Canada and the two local governments are no stranger to calamity.

The Regional District of Fraser Fort George has already issued evacuation orders for the area around Mud River and the City’s Emergency Services Department is keeping a close eye on the water levels in the two rivers that flow through the community.

“Emergency Preparedness Week is the perfect time to focus on what we need to do to be prepared for whatever type of emergency we might face,” says Anita de Dreu, Coordinator of Community Services for the Regional District. “Floods of course and with the warm weather we are anticipating we’re going to have more issues with flooding in residential areas. And we could also be facing wildfire and we’ve seen that in other areas of the province already.”

But while floods are easier to predict, a wildfire is much less so.

“Emergencies are not predictable, but we’re doing everything we can as a municipality to prepare our residents.”

As the wildfires of 2017 and 2018 have shown, they can be quite devastating if one is not prepared. The Regional District is urging homeowners to take stock of their properties and make them “Fire Smart,” meaning the removal of flammable debris six feet from around structures. That includes firewood. Clear branches from structures and trim branches to at least six feet off the ground. There are many other examples of how to fireproof your property at the Regional District website.

But all the best training could never have prepared anyone for COVID-19.

“We’re taking our direction from Dr. Bonnie Henry and we’re adjusting how we would deliver services based on that.”

So, while this is National Emergency Preparedness Week, it is a could time to look at a little closer to home to protect yourself.
