Summer camps cancelled at The Exploration Place

PRINCE GEORGE – The re-opening date is still in question for The Exploration Place, but one thing is for sure: there will be no summer camps.

CEO Tracy Calogheros said they will be issuing refunds to all families who have already paid.

Alternatively, Calogheros says they have been offering some online programming since they closed on March 13th. Just last week, they started up their own YouTube channel with content being shared also through their social media pages as well.

“My programming team is looking at a variety of options,” explained Calogheros. “The Canadian Association of Science Centres is exploring different ways to be able to offer content for kids right across the summer but coming from across the country.”

Having already been posting daily feedings of their animals, as well as behind the scenes of their artefact collection, Calogheros admits she too has been learning a lot through these experiences.

“I’m learning a lot because I don’t often get the chance to dig into not only my staff’s knowledge, but also our collection in depth. The general public is really enjoying them. In fact, we’ve had more contacts online since we shut down on March 13th than we would normally see in attendance in a full year.”

With summer approaching, the staff at The Exploration Place has been looking at their Nature Exchange Program and experiment with online programming, hoping to garner some interest from the public and pose as a way for kids and their parents to get outside during the warmer months.

The urban garden has also started to get planted with the hope of all of their produce being donated to food banks in Prince George.

“We don’t want to start doing outdoor programming that encourages crowds, because we really do believe that you have to follow the science, and you can’t just follow the science when it’s convenient. We need to follow it all the way through this pandemic.”

Calogheros admits while her and the staff at The Exploration Place are lonely and miss their visitors to the museum, they’re working towards ways to continue a virtual connection with the public through various methods.

Calogheros says her gut says the museum may open in September, however, there has yet to be a concrete decision made.
