PRINCE GEORGE – It took a matter of minutes for Mayor and Council to approve the 2020 budget.

In the words of the Director of Finance, what was presented last night was “the tail end of a very large body of work” that began as far back as January. That’s when Council was looking at a budget with a tax hike of 3.44%.

But, as with so many things, the COVID-19 pandemic put Mayor and Council in a very challenging place, hoping to offer tax relief to homeowners while grappling with revenue losses of a million dollars a month.

After a multitude of meetings, Council settled on a tax hike of 1.75%.

“We didn’t have agreement on all the pieces, but we got through an extremely difficult process in a very thoughtful but decisive manner,” stated Councillor Garth Frizzell.

But the budget was not passed unanimously.

Councillors Brian Skakun and Kyle Sampson voted against it.

“I believe that we could have gotten (the tax rate) lower than that,” said Councillor Sampson. He was pursuing a tax hike of .93%.

A balanced budget must be in the Province’s hands by May 15th.
