TYH: Keeping kids active at home

May 12, 2020 | 8:30 AM

Our lives changed in a matter of days after the pandemic was announced.

To name an example, children were pulled out of schools and asked to do work at home, and parents were also asked to bring work home.

At first, the idea may have seemed nice, but after a few days I am sure reality must have started to kick in. I can tell you right now that not getting out of the house to see friends, or for activities is finally beginning to hit me, but what about the young?

This week I spoke with Carol Madsen, Executive Director for Parent Support Services Society of B.C (PSSSBC) about how this change can be impacting parents, and how we can keep our kids busy at home.

“I think during this COVID-19 period is particularly stressful for parents. It’s stressful at anytime but with people being stuck in their houses, parks being closed, activities being cancelled it makes things really, really trying.”—Carol Madsen, Executive Director for Parent Support Services Society of B.C

Madsen mentioned that PSSSBC provides support circles to parents across the province to help them be the best parents they can be, and that if anyone is feeling stressed they are able to call their toll free support line 1-877-345-9777.

As for keeping kids busy during these times, Madsen was full of ideas such as baking, gardening, and pulling out board games. For the parents that are working from home, she suggested making kids your assistant, helping you shred papers, or acting as your minute taker during a meeting.

“Have the little shredder beside there and have your son or daughter be your assistant.”—Carol Madsen, Executive Director for Parent Support Services Society of B.C

Other ideas Madsen pitched included, walking the dog, bathing the dog, and doing chores around the house such as cleaning out cupboards.

Lastly she says that parents should give themselves a bit more leniency during these times when things are anything but normal.
