PRINCE GEORGE – The rainbow-coloured flag is a symbol of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer communities for many years.

A local high school has taken an extra step and conveyed those eye-catching colours onto a rug to remind people its school is a place of inclusivity.

School District 57 is on a path in making sure their learning spaces are inclusive and welcoming for all of their students and staff.

College Heights Secondary School is the first facility in the district to install a rainbow rug at one of its main entrances.

According to Assistant Superintendent Kap Manhas making a facility, welcoming can make a better learner. WATCH VIDEO:

Long time LGBTQ community spokesperson Shawn Peters agrees the rainbow carpet is a step in the right direction for the school district; however more support is needed from the province to support programs like these in the north.

There are plans in place to have a similar rainbow rug installed at Heritage elementary school, making it the first elementary school with a rainbow carpet.
