VICTORIA– A plan to re-introduce in class teaching is underway, with plans to have some students back in the classroom starting June 1st.

B.C. Minister of Education, Rob Fleming made the announcement this morning along B.C. Premier John Horgan and other dignitaries. They say this is a step towards the province’s plan to have full time in-class instruction for September.

“This is optional, it is voluntary.” –Rob Fleming, Minister of Education

Fleming said that starting June 1st, it will be a voluntary return to in-class learning for students. New guidelines will be in place for schools to follow from the Provincial Health Officer, such as limiting the number of students at schools, rigorous cleaning of high touch surfaces, and continued physical hygiene for students and staff (hand washing as soon as entering the building).

The in-class return to learning will also see scattered lunches, pick-ups and drop-offs in order to limit contact with large groups of people. Students, and staff will be required to self test everyday for symptoms of COVID-19.

Dr. Bonnie Henry reiterated that if anyone is feeling in the slightest bit sick, they should stay home.

Fleming says that measures will have to be taken for school transportation such as school busses, having one student per seat, plexiglass barriers etc.

For Kindergarten to grade five students they will be able to return to school part-time, Minister Fleming saying that may be 2-3 times a week. For grades 6-12, schools will be at a 20 per cent capacity at all times, which may mean that middle and highschool students will only visit their schools once a week for the month of June.

Premier Horgan reassured the public that this step forward would not be done if the province did not feel it could possibly see the return to increased in-class instruction in a safe way.

As this is a voluntary process, remote learning will continue for those families who feel comfortable sending their kids to school and for those who choose not to.

As for the return of childcare, Minister of State for Child Care, Katrina Chen, says that they are not mandated to re-open and that it is really up to each individual child care service to see if they can safely return to some level of operation.
