Impressive milestone hit for local group spreading positivity through parades
PRINCE GEORGE — What started out as a way to celebrate her daughter’s 19th birthday has turned into so much more for Melanie Hanson. The idea came after seeing something similar happening in Kelowna but it has snowballed into something much bigger than she anticipated.
“We ended up having to start our own [Facebook] page, we have had hundreds of requests. In the beginning, there were about 20 requests coming in every day,” explained Melanie Hanson, who organizes the parades. “When COVID first came around it was scary and we lived in fear. This has become the opposite. Prince George won’t be remembered for hiding in quarantine and living in fear, we will be remembered for how we all came together during this time.”
Mini parades, originally just for birthdays but now requests for celebrations of life and even weddings. It started with just a few cars and some basic decorations but quickly evolved. Parade lines range from a handful of cars to over 50 and are for both young and old.
“It makes me happy [my parents] set this up for me because if they didn’t I wouldn’t be happy on my birthday because of COVID,” said Destannie Wayenberg, who was treated to a parade for her tenth birthday.
