BC RCMP remind boaters to be safe this Safe Boating Awareness Week

SURREY– BC RCMP are reminding the public of several key things when it comes to being safe on the water this Safe Boating Awareness Week (May 16-22), as the COVID-19 crisis poses new risks.

A release by the BC RCMP says that it is more important than ever that boaters limit unnecessary risks (spread of COVID-19) to other boaters, first responders, and themselves by keeping informed.

If you are hopping on your boat, RCMP want boaters to be aware of travel restrictions and public health guidelines before heading anywhere as well as ensuring you have all mandatory safety equipment.

TIPS:

  • Avoid all unnecessary travel on the water
  • Stay in your local community. Many small, isolated, and Indigenous communities are restricting access to visitors to protect themselves from the spread of COVID-19
  • Limit the people aboard your boat to people in your immediate household
  • Maintain a safe distance of 2 metres from other groups while getting to your boat, or putting it into the water
  • Don’t go boating if you or someone in your household is sick
  • Leave a trip plan with someone on shore
  • Wear a personal flotation device or life jacket
  • Watch your speed and look out for others while sharing the waters

RCMP also remind the public to not drink and boat as impaired driving laws apply even when you’re on the water.
