UPDATE: 2 new cases of COVID-19 in Northern Health, three deaths in B.C.

VICTORIA—Three new deaths of COVID-19 were reported in B.C. by Provincial Health Officer, Dr. Bonnie Henry and Health Minister Adrian Dix, in a joint statement this afternoon (May 22).

All three deaths took place in the Fraser health region, and bring the provincial death toll to 155. In B.C. 18 cases of the virus were reported, two of those are in the Northern Health Region, brining the total of test positive cases to 62 in the north.

Cases by Health Region:

  • Vancouver Coastal Health: 888
  • Fraser Health: 1,236
  • Vancouver Island Health: 127
  • Interior Health: 194
  • Northern Health: 62

B.C.’s total of test positive cases is not at 2,507, however, only 310 of those are active. 2,042 people have recovered from COVID-19.

To date, 41 people are hospitalized, eight of who are in intensive care. No new health-care outbreaks were reported and one at the Lions Gate Hospital in Vancouver has been declared over. In total there are 14 long-term care or assisted-living facilities and two acute-care units have outbreaks.

Dr. Henry and Minister Dix, announced that in addition to not allowing gatherings with more than 50 people, the order has been amended to include no more than 50 vehicles for outdoor drive-in events, with a restriction on the sale of refreshments. “Anyone attending these events must stay in their cars unless they have to go to washrooms, which must be serviced with running water for proper hand hygiene,” read the statement.
