Quesnel Flying Club honours fallen Snowbird with flyover tribute
QUESNEL — The Canadian Forces Snowbirds have been touring across Canada trying to boost morale through the COVID-19 pandemic with flyovers at various different communities. The mission is called Operation Inspiration. However, on May 17, that mission was postponed after a crash was reported in Kamloops resulting in the death of one pilot, Captain Jennifer Casey.
“The Quesnel Flying Club is honoured to be able to, unfortunately, have to do this kind of an effort. So we are giving back to the community, to the Snowbirds, and to the country,” explained Fred Taylor, President of the Quesnel Flying Club. “We recognize that, even here, we go out on a fun flight but that could be us. You be careful, diligent, tell people where you are going, and you hope for the best.”
Saturday, Casey was honoured by the Quesnel Flying Club with a flyover of their own. About half a dozen pilots taking part in the event. The Snowbirds have a strong relationship with Quesnel, being a staple of the popular SkyFest.
“They always like coming here because Quesnel is a smaller venue and it is more family-based. We got to know them quite well and I think they always like to come back,” Pilot Dieter Beisel said of the Snowbirds, the group that got him into aviation as well. “The Snowbirds were an inspiration to me and probably the reason I started flying many years ago.”
