96 per cent decrease in passenger activity for April at YXS: More flights soon

May 26, 2020 | 9:48 AM

PRINCE GEORGE—The Prince George Airport Authority (PGAA) has released passenger activity data for the month of April, and are looking to the future.

For the month of April, there was a 96 per cent decrease in passenger activity compared to the same month last year.

In April 2019, 42,911 passengers boarded and unboarded flights at YXS, compared to just 1,899 last month.

“It’s a double-edged sword. Those numbers show people are listening to the advice of public health officials and avoiding non-essential travel, however as a not-for-profit organization, we rely heavily on passenger activity.”—Gordon Duke, President and CEO, Prince George Airport Authority

Starting June, Air Canada and WestJet will be operating flights four days a week (Monday,Wednesday, Friday and Sunday) to Vancouver. For the month of July, Central Mountain Air will be flying three days a week (Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday) to Kamloops, Kelowna, Terrace/Kitimat and Fort St. John.

Prince George was not part of Pacific Coastal Airline’s phase one re-launch plan, however the PGAA says they are optimistic they will be part of phase two.

“We are taking advantage of the down time to do a lot of runway maintenance, interior/exterior painting and training of our Operations staff.”—Trevor Gust, Manager of Operations

The airport restaurant and Internationals Area remain closed at the Prince George Airport. Non-medical grade face coverings are mandatory as per Transport Canada. PGAA has also eliminated short-term parking fees as long as you stay with your vehicle.

PGAA says they are expecting numbers for the month of May to be even lower than those for the month of April.
