With many sports being halted due to Covid-19 this spring and summer, a number of Associations and organizations are looking for ways to keep their members engaged.

For PGYSA, they tried something new over the weekend by taking the game of soccer from the pitch to the console.

The club hosted its first-ever E-Sports tournament, which featured 18 members take part in the event across both X-Box and Playstation.

“We were just talking about how to engage the public type of thing and we were just shooting off some ideas of what we could do. I then mentioned that many youth these days are involved in video games and we are a soccer club, so why not play Fifa 20. Why don’t we make it a soccer E-Sports tournament,” explained Grassroots Director Johnathan Botelho.

Even though the competitive juices were flowing between all of the participants, it was all about bringing all of their members together during these difficult times.

“That was the main goal. We want to be a leader in the community in connecting and bring people together because during these times we don’t want to segregate and keep people isolated from each other. We want to connect as many people as possible,” added Botelho.

With all of the positive feedback from the event, now the Association is talking about not only doing another E-Sports tournament but looking at ways of potentially expanding it moving forward.

They plan on holding another E-Sports tournament in a couple of weeks, with more details being released in the coming days.
