UPDATE: One new case of COVID-19 in Northern Health, 9 in B.C.

VICTORIA—One new case of COVID-19 was announced in the Northern Health Region, today (May 27).

The new case brings the north’s total to 63 test positive cases. Provincially nine new cases of the virus were reported, bringing the province’s total to 2,550.

Cases by Health Region:

  • Vancouver Coastal Health: 899
  • Fraser Health: 1,267
  • Vancouver Island Health: 127
  • Interior Health: 194
  • Northern Health: 63

One new COVID-19 related death was reported today bringing the total of deaths in the province to 162.

To date there are 244 active cases pf COVID-19 in B.C. and 2,144 people have recovered. 37 individuals are currently hospitalized, and seven of those are in ICU.

No new health care outbreaks were reported; there are currently 14 long-term care or assisted-living facilities and one acute-care unit have outbreaks.

“We are moving forward carefully into Phase 2, assessing our progress week by week, and we are encouraged by what we have seen so far,” read the joint statement by Provincial Health Officer, Dr. Bonnie Henry and Health Minister, Adrian Dix.

Since COVID-19 has a two week incubation period, any new cases as a result of the ease in restrictions will start to appear over the coming week.

Once again Dr. Henry and Minister Dix are reminding the public to enjoy the beauty of their province closer to home, “and look to increase social interactions only after fully considering the risks to you and your family.”

According to the statement once health officials have a better understanding of the virus, in B.C. in mid-June, they’ll have the data to determine their timing for further actions.
