RCMP say ‘dramatic results’ due to increased patrols in downtown

May 28, 2020 | 2:14 PM

PRINCE GEORGE—Local RCMP say that enhanced enforcement in the City’s downtown and surrounding areas, over the past two weeks, is already showing “dramatic results.”

In a release from Prince George RCMP it says that frontline officers have been stepping up visibility and enforcement in the Downtown and Gateway commercial areas, and along the corridors in between, over the past two weeks.

Around 125 violation tickets have been issued, including under the Motor Vehicle Act and Liquor Control and Licensing Act. Police say that bicycle related offences and open liquor offences are the main violations observed.

A dozen wanted people were identified and arrested in the downtown and surrounding areas. RCMP also entered into 40 Criminal Code or Controlled Drugs and Substances Act investigations—ten of which resulted in reports to the Federal Prosecution Service of Canada of the B.C. Prosecution Service. These are in addition to the calls for service that were reported to police by the public.

An additional ten people have been arrested for being drunk in public and unable to care for themselves—these are also in addition to reports received from the public.-

Prince George RCMP say that “these actions have already resulted in a noticeable reduction of open drug use, drug trafficking and mischief related incidents in these areas of our community.”

Local police say they’ve observed a reduction of violations to the Motor Vehicle Act as it relates to riding bicycles, and expect these trends to continue.
