BCHL ready for 20/21 season, waiting on go ahead from health authority

It has been a very busy week for the BCHL in regards to news surrounding the 2020-2021 season.

The league has confirmed there will be a campaign next year, and plenty of different scenarios of when it could actually begin.

“There’s a light at the end of the tunnel,” stated Kings General Manager Mike Hawes.

“The league has been working extremely hard to develop some plans so that when both Hockey Canada and Health Authorities give us the green light that we are good to go.”

Making sure they have the proper protocols in place for players and fans’ safety is a top priority for the league, and by preparing now, they can hit the ground running when they do get the green light.

When it comes to that return, though, the league has plans for a variety of different start dates.

“Right now our hope is to start on a regular scheduled date which was in September,” added Hawes.

“But we certainly do have plans of if we have to back it up to October 1st or November 1st or hopefully not, but even December 1st. We have plans in place and schedules in place that will have us ready to go with any of those dates.”

However, as the league shared via their statement earlier this week, they need to have fans in the stands. There isn’t a scenario where there can be nobody in the crowd.

“That’s part of the discussion we have had. We need to have fans in the stands. Teams need to make revenue to offset travel costs. So that is part of it. Obviously we are willing to bend and start at, even if it’s 25% of fans for the first month of the season. With the promise that we could potentially extend it to 50%, maybe a month later or something like that. We need to be able to have some fans to generate some revenue through ticket sales for teams in our league so that we can operate healthy and be viable moving forward,” explained Hawes.

The league is trying to be patient, but despite not knowing when the campaign will start, there will be a season and they couldn’t be more excited to resume operations.
