UNBC soccer clubs face difficult challenge of recruiting moving forward

Jun 15, 2020 | 4:14 PM

It’s been one week since the UNBC Timberwolves soccer clubs were forced to cancel their 2020 season, and now both Coaching staffs face the challenge of not only keeping their athletes engaged, but also building a roster for 2021.

No season makes the challenging task of recruiting that much more difficult for the squads, as they now look ahead to 2021.

“The new normal is there is no soccer in the community whatsoever for us to go out and recruit,” stated Head Coach of the Men’s soccer team Steve Simonson.

“Most of the recruiting for the upcoming year tends to be done for this time of year anyway, so it’s start fresh for looking for September 2021 and navigate the situation as best as we can.”

Despite the lack of soccer in the community, around the province, and across the country, both the men’s and women’s soccer teams were able to recruit some players for this upcoming season prior to the cancellation. What will make it difficult is not knowing how long the shutdown of minor sports will be, and the coaches not being able to get out and see players in person.

“Our recruiting tournaments have shut down so we haven’t been able to do any recruiting. Players haven’t been observed and we don’t know how that is going to last,” added Women’s Head Coach Neil Sedgwick.

“We are still getting emails and still getting video from student-athletes and we are assessing and being in touch with them. We do have a shortlist of who we are looking at for 2021, but we won’t get a chance to see them for a while and this will be the way we recruit for the next little while.”

When it comes to the current renditions of the Timberwolves, both teams are optimistic that hopefully they can resume operations in the new year and can take to the pitch for workouts and practice sessions with things hopefully, returning to normal.
