PRINCE GEORGE—School District 57’s Board of Education will consider its Annual Budget Bylaw for 2020-21, the 2021-22 Five Year Capital Plan Summary as well as a new Board Policy Manual, in tonight’s (June 15) at its virtual public meeting.

School Board Trustee, Sharel Warrington will present a report from the Board’s budget consultation Expanded Committee of the Whole. The Committee reviewed an overview of the Board’s 2016-2021 Strategic Plan, reviewing budget assumptions and discussing budget considerations resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic. The Committee also received information on the anticipated 2020-21 revenues and expenditures, surplus balances, and the school organization process.

The Board will then consider the first and second readings of a balanced school district Annual Budget Bylaw for 2020-21; the Board will also have the opportunity to consider final readings of the Annual Budget Bylaw if it unanimously agrees to do so.

“The 2020-21 Annual Budget Bylaw that will be considered provides for all existing programs and services to be maintained and ensures compliance with the restored language. We look forward to the 2020-21 school year during which the Board’s Strategic Plan will be updated, and programs designed specifically to support the continuity of student learning during these uncertain times will be implemented.”—Tim Bennett, SD57 Board Chair

The 2021-22 Five Year capital Plan Summary, which includes a $75.3-million replacement project at D.P Todd Secondary School, intended at addressing capacity challenges in the current building, will also be up for consideration. The Summary must be submitted to the Ministry of Education by June 30.

Also up for consideration is the new Board Policy Manual, which if adopted would replace existing policies and bylaws of the district.

“It was about a year ago that the Board engaged in a process to review our existing policies with a lens toward making policies more efficient for our schools, staff and community.”—Tim Bennett, SD57 Board Chair

The Board passed a motion in April to distribute the draft Board Policy Manual to reference groups for a 60-day input period which ended on June 6.

If the new manual is approved it will be posted to the School District’s website along with the accompanying Administrative Procedures Manual.
