YXS continues to get hammered by COVID-19 pandemic

PRINCE GEORGE — Tough numbers out of YXS with the airport reporting a 95 per cent drop in passenger traffic for the second month in a row in May.

Last month, the airport says 1,910 passengers came through the airport compared to 42,537 in May 2019.

The airport says it continues to cut costs where it can and is looking for new revenue generating opportunities to deal with the situation. It’s also lobbying all levels of government for financial help.

YXS says information provided by the Canadian Airports Council suggests it could take five years for a full recovery in the aviation sector.

There’s some good news on the horizon though with the airport noting Central Mountain Air will resume service with a limited schedule starting July 7. They will be flying three days a week to Kamloops, Kelowna, Terrace/Kitimat and Fort St. John.

Air Canada will be flying daily to Vancouver effective this Thursday and WestJet continues to serve the YVR market with four flights a week. On July 5, WestJet will add a second flight to Vancouver, six days a week.

Prince George Airport was not part of Pacific Coastal Airlines’ phase two relaunch plan, however it says it continues to work closely with all of its airline partners to facilitate service re-launches.
