PRINCE GEORGE — Update: The BC Conservation Officer Service now confirm that a woman & her mother were attacked by a bear along a logging road 50 kilometres outside of town yesterday (June 16) afternoon at around 1:30 p.m.

“A report came in that two adult women were walking along a remote logging road and were walking their dogs and encountered a bear,” says COS Sgt. Steve Ackles.

“The dogs startled the bear and the bear did attack the dogs. The women suffered minor injuries and were hospitalized and they are okay and out of the hospital.”

He adds that their Predator Attack Team has determined that it was a defensive attack “where the dogs surprised the bear.”

As a result, Ackles says the bear will not be euthanized because they are satisfied that the bear was not “in a predatory mode.”

In light of the incident, he recommends putting your dog on a leash while out in the wild.

Ackles says the location of the attack is not being released because the victims prefer not to be identified.

Earlier: The Conservation Officer Service says two women were attacked by a bear just outside of Prince George Tuesday.

The Ministry of Environment told CKPG Today the women suffered “minor injuries.”

The exact location hasn’t been disclosed yet and the situation has been described as fluid.

We’ll update the story as soon as more information becomes available.
