VANCOUVER—Eight new cases of COVID-19 were reported in today’s (June 18) COVID-19 update.

None of those were in the Northern Health Region, the north remains at 65 test positive cases.

Cases by Health Region:

  • Vancouver Coastal Health: 950
  • Fraser Health: 1,441
  • Vancouver Island Health: 130
  • Interior Health: 197
  • Northern Health: 65

Provincially the total of test-positive cases is now at 2,783, with 190 of those being active cases. Ten people are in hospital and of those five are in ICU.

No new deaths were reported.

Provincial Health Officer, Dr. Bonnie Henry mentioned that one of the new cases announced today is an adult in the independent school system in the Fraser Health Region. Dr. Henry mentioned that the person’s close contacts have been notified and that no children have been involved. As a precaution, in-class learning has been stopped for the remainder of the school year at that school.

“This is not surprising.”–Bonnie Henry, Provincial Health Officer

Dr. Henry explained that the one identified case in the school system isn’t a surprise, and is something the province was monitoring since the voluntary return to in-class instruction for students across the province.

No new health-care outbreaks were reported, there continue to be seven active outbreaks. Six are in long-term care and one is at an acute-care facility. 588 cases have been associated with the health-care system, 365 of those being residents and 223 being staff.

As for community outbreaks, Henry announced that one has been declared over, leaving three active community outbreaks.

Henry once again urged British Columbians to stay home if they are feeling even in the slightest bit ill.
