PG RCMP say their online crime reporting tool is being ‘underutilized’

PRINCE GEORGE—Local RCMP are participating in an online crime reporting pilot project, which they say isn’t receiving as much traction as it should.

The Prince George RCMP Detachment has been participating in the online crime reporting pilot project since November of 2019 but say the tool is being underutilized. From the launch of the project until May 20 of this year, only 42 crime reports were reported using the online tool.

“We believe this tool is being underutilized and want to increase awareness.”—Cpl. Craig Douglass, spokesperson, Prince George RCMP

“Many crimes go unreported because victims don’t want to bother police or don’t want to wait on hold for a non-emergency operator to take the report. Well, this is an alternative way to report the crime, which will benefit the public and police,” adds Cpl. Douglass.

According to Prince George RCMP many bike thefts go unreported, leading owners to never being reunited with their stolen property, and no criminal charges if police catch a thief.

“The more crime is reported, the more accurate we can be with targeting crime trends and those responsible.”—Cpl. Craig Douglass, spokesperson, Prince George RCMP

The online tool also allows for call takers and frontline personnel to focus on higher priority calls.

Incidences that are reportable online:

  • Damage/mischief to property where the value is under $5,000
  • Damage/mischief to a vehicle where the value is under $5,000
  • Hit and run to property or an unoccupied vehicle
  • Theft of bicycle where the value is under $5,000
  • Theft of other property where the value is under $5,000
  • Theft from a vehicle where the value is under $5,000
  • Lost property
