New bill introduced may bring changes to the use of license plate decals

Jun 23, 2020 | 7:00 AM

VICTORIA— The province has introduced a new bill that if passed would offer some flexibility around the use of the decal on B.C. license plates.

Bill 20, the Motor Vehicle Amendment Act (No. 2), 2020 would, for example, allow validation decals to be non-expiring or valid for periods longer than one year. It also provides for regulations that could authorize ICBC to issue other documents, or take other actions, respecting the validity of a vehicle license instead of issuing validation decals.

Consultation with law enforcement, brokers and other stakeholders will begin over the coming months in order to inform future policy decisions about any changes to use of the decal, as well as to support the drafting associated regulations.
